How my notes from learning Business Central turned into a blog, and how it's built.

When I started working with Dynamics 365 Business Central, I had a whole new ecosystem to learn. I started writing down the issues I ran into and how I solved them, along with the small things I picked up along the way. After a while there was enough of it that I put it into a blog, and that’s Daxly.

The posts are mostly tips, how-to guides and updates. Things that are useful to know when you work in Business Central every day, but that are often hard to find in the official docs.

How it’s built

The site is built with Astro and deployed to Cloudflare Pages as a static site. Posts are Markdown files, with frontmatter for things like tags, series and featured posts.

On top of that, I’ve added a few things I wanted as a reader:

  • Search, using Pagefind. It builds the search index at build time, so it’s fast and doesn’t need a server.
  • Likes on posts. They’re stored in a Cloudflare D1 database behind a small Azure Function, which hashes IP addresses so each person can only like a post once.
  • Series navigation for guides that span several posts. Give posts the same series name and they link to each other automatically.
  • Reading time, and a table of contents in a sticky sidebar on posts with three or more headings.

Design

Headings use Fraunces and body text uses Instrument Sans, on a light theme with a warm palette. I wanted it to be easy to read and not get in the way of the content.

What’s next

Dark mode, a newsletter and a better background. Mostly, though, more posts.
